ELLWOOD QUALITY STEELS

EQS is North America's most reliable producer of high-quality, low-cost carbon and low alloy steel ingots. Our ingots range in size from 2 to 50 tons. They are produced from an inventory of more than 40 active mold sizes. As a result, Ellwood Quality Steels can quickly manufacture the starting stock required by leading open die forgers, closed die forgers, extruders, ring rollers, plate mills and bar mills throughout the continent.

Areas of expertise

Since every phase of the ASEA-SKF split steelmaking system at EQS is highly monitored and closely controlled, our steels are known for their exceptional cleanliness and tight chemistry ranges. Also, the repeatability of specific alloy contents for given grades allows our customers to achieve consistent heat-treated mechanical property results. Meeting a difficult customer specification is a matter of routine performance for a steel produced by EQS.

Our customers know that the steels they are purchasing from EQS are competitive with any air-melted steel being produced in the world today. They also know that they can use EQS steels in the most demanding applications, everything from high-performance bearings to nuclear submarines. At times, EQS has quoted a customer requirement that other steelmakers have refused to meet, but there has never been a quality level quoted by another steelmaker that EQS could not achieve.

Facilities and equipment

The EQS melt shop features a modern 45 ton UHP Electric Arc Furnace with Eccentric Bottom Tapping (EBT) and custom alloy delivery system, split ASEA-SKF secondary steelmaking unit, and bottom pouring capability. The installation of a second ladle furnace, part of the split ASEA-SKF secondary unit, improves ladle chemistry control and steel temperature control prior to bottom pouring into molds. Using this equipment, we can produce high quality steel quickly and efficiently. EQS continues to make investments that will keep our ingot production at the leading edge of world-class steelmaking technology.

To meet our customers' special needs, EQS maintains annealing furnaces, as well as torch-cutting, sawing and surface-grinding capabilities. We also deliver cold ingot shipments by either rail or truck. Hot ingots are shipped by insulated truck within a 200-mile radius of the plant.

Operating philosophy

EQS encourages its customers to view us as an extension of their own manufacturing facility. To accommodate this service concept, we emphasize maximum flexibility and responsiveness throughout our entire organization.

If necessary, we can melt a heat on the same day that the order is entered. At the same time, our on-time deliveries for routine production consistently exceed 95 percent. Our ability to make delivery promises and deliver on them is an important part of our service-oriented philosophy - it means that EQS customers do not lose critical orders because of steel availability.

This commitment to our customers is matched by a commitment to our employees. For example, EQS provides both metallurgical and operations training to all employees so that they can better perform their assigned tasks. Management leads by example at EQS - we discuss all critical issues, including financial performance, with employees. We have also implemented a unique compensation system that incorporates a base wage, production incentive, and profit sharing payout. In this way, the steelmakers at EQS directly share in the financial performance of the company.

The combination of steelmaking technology and steelmaking talent means that excellence is an every day occurrence at EQS.
