ENF's experienced employees create products for a wide range of highly specialized applications, including hard target penetrators and artillery components, pipe molds, rotors for power generation, wind turbine shafts and other relatively high length/width ratio products with a bored interior diameter. Our heat treatment, specialized testing, and well-equipped machining facilities are designed to meet a variety of material property requirements and to produce a wide range of sizes and product geometries to very close tolerances.

Areas of expertise

Product size capability at Ellwood National Forge extends up to 120" in diameter and 88' in length. State-of-the-art boring methods provide capabilities up to 48" in bore diameter and up to 50' in depth. Thru boring, bottle boring, blind bore and honing operations are only a few of Ellwood National Forge boring capabilities. We design and build specialized tooling for a wide variety of machining operations providing Ellwood National Forge the opportunity to meet stringent product and customer requirements.

Facilities and equipment

Machining: ENF's focus on equipment efficiency, capability, and reliability has lead to machine tool upgrades and purchases that permit us to address an ever widening scope of conventional and CNC machining operations required in the production of large precision machined forgings. Our facilities include small, medium and large turning and boring lathes; horizontal and vertical milling centers; drill presses; planer mills; and welding equipment. ENF has noted experience in precision, boring and honing processes that are used in the production of close tolerance pipe molds, pressure vessels, oil field products, and air delivered ordnance.

Heat Treating: Modern heat treating facilities are capable of thermal stress relieving, annealing, normalizing, and tempering. Vertical and horizontal furnaces are used in conjunction with oil and water  quench tanks. Horizontal spray quench facilities and a fast fan cooling tower are also available. Ellwood National Forge maintains 15 vertical furnaces capable of heat treating products up to 32' (15m) in length. There are also 5 horizontal furnaces capable of handling products up to 45' (14m) in length. All furnaces are equipped with state-of-the-art controls to assure accurate temperature and furnace operation during the thermo cycle process. Heat Indication Testing capabilities are available to measure the stability of turbine rotors under operating conditions.
