Ellwood National Crankshaft is a unique manufacturer of new and reconditioned crankshafts for medium speed engines in the 800 to 6000 horsepower range. These engines are used in a variety of applications including diesel-electric locomotives, marine use for both propulsion and auxiliary power generation, stationary power, and gas compression. ENC has been a crankshaft supplier to leading engine manufacturers throughout the world since 1915. ENC regularly produces crankshafts that are approved by ABS, Lloyd's, DNV and other third party inspection entities, and has a quality program focusing on continuous improvement. The ample size of our installed capital base offers production capacities that can meet the fluctuating volume demands of the market.
Ellwood National Crankshaft Services (ENCS) is a division of ECM and is located in a separate operating facility in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. ENCS specializes in the reconditioning of large diesel crankshafts and the sale of new EMD and ALCO crankshafts into the replacement market. ENCS meets the reconditioning requirements of our customers through a repair and return system, a unit exchange system, or outright sales of reconditioned crankshafts.
Areas of expertise
ENC offers finish machined, rough machined and as-forged crankshafts. Our unique forging process results in outstanding near-finished size crankshafts. Surface hardening specifications can be met by on-site nitriding or induction hardening installations. Our CNC grinding and surface finish capability will meet the most demanding customer requirements.
ENCS has the experience and technical ability to refurbish a wide range of crankshafts to OEM and/or customer reconditioning specifications. We have extensive experience reconditioning locomotive, compressor, pump, press, and marine crankshafts.
Facilities and equipment
Our Loewy, 4000-ton multi-directional forging press is used primarily to produce continuous grain flow crankshafts. It also has the capability of forging components through upsetting, back extrusion, and offsetting to nearly-finished shape.
A dedicated crankshaft reconditioning facility in Hermitage, Pennsylvania services our ENCS customers. The facility is 36,000 square feet and is conveniently located 15 miles west of the intersection of Interstates 79 and 80.
CNC machining capabilities from rough milling to finish grind.
The largest forging, machining, and heat treat production capacities in our crankshaft size range.
Extensive heat treating facilities allow for thermal stress relieving, annealing, normalizing, hardening, and tempering. Vertical and horizontal furnaces are used along with the necessary oil, water, and polymer quench tanks. Horizontal spray quench facilities are also available.
A variety of calibrated mechanical testing procedures are performed by certified personnel to assure compliance with all customer specifications. A complete array of on-site laboratory equipment enables our skilled personnel to perform all relevant destructive and nondestructive testing.
