Areas of expertise

With more than 90 years of experience in shaft manufacture, Ellwood Crankshaft and Machine is the world's leading manufacturer of large, one-of-a-kind, multiple-throw crankshafts. Our products run up to 35 feet in length, weigh more than 40,000 pounds and feature tolerances as tight as 0.0004 inches.

Yet ECM's expertise extends beyond large-part, tight-tolerance machining. We also offer our customers solutions. Based on their part application and our technical knowledge, we can help them select the right material and mechanical properties. We will also perform nondestructive testing and assembly to make sure our products perform as designed by our customers.

ECM's products and services include:

Crankshafts and eccentrics used in mechanical stamping presses,

reciprocating air and gas compressors, reciprocating pumps, engines, mechanical shears, rock crushers, homogenizers and other miscellaneous applications

Concentric shafts and rolls such as large industrial fan shafts; specialty rolling mill rolls for tables, levelers and edgers; solid four and six pole motor and generator shafts, tie and strain rods and extension shafts used in integral compressor/engines. We also can provide semi-finished forgings used for rock drill bits, roll ends, finish machining customer-supplied material, refurbishing used parts, reverse engineering and nondestructive testing services.

ECM sells its products to capital equipment suppliers in the automotive and appliance industries; the food and beverage industries; the oil, gas and related energy and manufacturing industries; and many other industrial sectors in the United States and around the world.

Facilities and equipment

Our facility covers more than 1 1/3 acres under roof and contains more than 35 major machine tools. All plant activities are controlled by a sophisticated scheduling system that is designed to shrink lead times and help us achieve the industry's best delivery performance.

Any mention of our facilities also should include those of our sister divisions. Using the additional capabilities of Ellwood City Forge, Ellwood National Crankshaft, and Ellwood Quality Steels, we can control the supply and production of material instead of relying solely on the open market.

Capabilities

Parts to 35 feet in length, 62 inches in diameter and weights to 60,000 pounds. Additionally, ECM can grind and conventionally finish parts to 22 feet, 52 inches and 25,000 pounds respectively.

Operating philosophy

Even though we make some of the largest crankshafts in the world, ECM is known for its attention to the smallest detail. For example, ECM provides "one-stop shopping" single purchase order responsibility that covers everything from the purchase of raw material through processing, inspection and delivery. This methodical approach allows us to quickly and efficiently respond to our customers' inquiries and needs.

Representatives from sales, operations, accounting, quality, planning and scheduling, and safety and maintenance work toward a common goal - customer satisfaction. Team members share supervision, training, education, planning and personnel-related activities and are rewarded by generous profit sharing and other incentives.
