Ellwood today announced a project to upgrade its open-die forging press at Ellwood City Forge - New Castle as part of its continued investment in manufacturing capabilities.
The project will increase the capability of the existing open-die forging press from 5,000-tons to 7,300-tons while extending its operational life. The upgraded press will support the production of large, demanding forged components for mission-critical applications and help Ellwood meet the evolving needs of its customers.
Ellwood selected Danieli Breda for its extensive experience in forging technology and equipment modernization. Drawing on their demonstrated expertise and in-depth understanding of the existing Danieli machine, Danieli Breda developed a solution that will increase capabilities while preserving the original machine footprint. This approach allows Ellwood to maximize the value of its existing equipment while minimizing modifications to the plant layout and reduce installation risks and downtime.
The upgrade will include hydraulic modifications, and next-generation automation designed to improve performance and reliability. Additional manipulation capability will be added as well. The upgraded press is expected to begin forging in the third quarter of 2027. Ellwood City Forge is working in advance to build inventory and minimize schedule disruption during the brief outage.
This project is part of Ellwood's continued efforts to equip its talented, hardworking team with state-of-the-art technology and tools. The investment will help support Ellwood's specialty metals, forgings, engineered components, and other product development efforts particularly in high-performance alloys and the challenging, mission-critical applications of aero, space, defense, and power generation markets.
Ellwood City Forge Group President Valli Senthilnathan commented, "We are constantly challenging our team with new products and markets. This upgraded press capability and reliability will support our efforts to extend our expertise into more and more challenging materials and configurations, and demonstrates our commitment to our team by giving them the tools they need to deliver solutions to our customers." Senthilnathan continued, "Our long-term perspective at Ellwood demands continued investment, and our family ownership and leadership believe in reinvesting in the company and team to meet the needs of our customers for decades to come."
