ELLWOOD NATIONAL STEEL

ENS, located in Irvine, Pennsylvania, was chartered in the spring of 2005 as an extension of Ellwood Quality Steels manufacturing capabilities.  Utilizing the engineering and steelmaking know how from EQS, the facility was constructed to meet the ever increasing demands of our customers by providing high quality, low cost carbon and low alloy steel ingots to the forging industry.  This approach to steelmaking was followed when Ellwood National Steel was started in Irvine, PA. in 2005 and a CORE/Danieli ladle furnace was added in 2007. ENS specializes in bottom poured, straight sided and fluted cylindrical ingots to 47" in diameter.   Together, ENS and EQS can produce the starting stock required by leading forging operations.

Areas of expertise

Every phase of the steelmaking system at ENS is highly monitored and closely controlled using a quality control system identical to EQS.  Customers of EQS should expect the same exceptional cleanliness and tight chemistry ranges that they are familiar with.  Our repeatability of precise alloy content for specific grades allows our customers to achieve consistent heat-treated mechanical properties from one heat to the next.  The success of our steelmaking team and Quality System is demonstrated by receiving ISO 9001:2000 certification in September 2006.

Facilities and equipment

ENS continues to make investments that will keep our ingot production at the leading edge of world-class steelmaking technology. The ENS melt shop features a robust 50 ton Electric Arc Furnace with spout tap.  The spout tap allows ENS to rapidly change grade production without fear of residual contamination.   The newly installed CORE/Danielli Ladle metallurgical furnace with custom alloy system and slag rake, compliment the CORE vacuum tank degasser.  This arrangement provides for excellent ladle chemistry and steel temperature control prior to bottom pouring into molds.  With this world class steelmaking technology, ENS can produce high quality steel quickly and efficiently, meeting our customers requirements.

For our customers' special needs, ENS maintains annealing furnaces, as well as torch-cutting, sawing and surface-grinding capabilities. Cold ingots are shipped either by rail or truck. Hot ingots are shipped by insulated truck to locations within a 200-mile radius of the plant.

Operating philosophy

ENS and its employees are focused on our customers' needs and demands.  The philosophy of "customer first" is held by all individuals in ENS team from the entry level to senior management.  Our goal is to provide the utmost in flexibility and responsiveness to the ever changing requests of our customers.

Our commitment to our customers is matched by the commitment to our employees. ENS provides both metallurgical and operations training to all employees so that they can perform all assigned tasks with the best safety, efficiency and quality.  All employees are then encouraged to further develop their skills by becoming proficient in other jobs within the organization.  Our management team is no different.  Leading by example at ENS is expected.  All critical issues, including financial performance, are discussed openly with employees.  To encourage and reward employee commitment to our goals, we have implemented a unique compensation system that incorporates a base wage, production incentive, and profit sharing payout.  In this way, the steelmakers at ENS have a direct interest in the operating and financial performance of the company.

ENS's unique combination of steelmaking technology and steelmaking talent means that excellence is an every day occurrence at our Irvine PA facility.
